Why HVAC/R Techs are Heroes

Enrolling in ETI to pursue an HVAC/R career isn’t just about finding a well-paying, in-demand job. HVAC/R technicians also help people every day. From installing HVAC systems in new construction to responding to a homeowner’s crisis phone call, technicians do a lot to make our lives safer and happier.

Here are just some of the ways you could make a difference as an HVAC/R tech:

1. Keep people safe in their homes and places of work

HVAC/R techs keep odors, contaminants, or worse from spreading throughout a home, office, or hospital. Without safe ventilation, people are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas with dangerous health effects. Symptoms of exposure include headaches, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting; it can trigger heart attacks and quickly become fatal. As an HVAC/R tech, you would keep everyone safe from this risk by regularly maintaining HVACs or by replacing outdated systems.

2. Ensure your customers’ comfort and peace-of-mind

Even when serious risks aren’t a concern, your work as an HVAC/R tech goes a long way to making people happy every day. You protect their investments in buildings and other belongings, and you help keep them comfortable. Extreme temperatures and high humidity aren’t a concern with an effective and well-maintained HVAC system. But managing humidity and temperature is about more than just comfort. If not controlled, high humidity can also lead to bigger indoor problems, such as dust mites or mold. As an HVAC/R technician, you would prevent such threats.

3. Help clients lower their energy bills

The average household’s HVAC use makes up about half of its energy bill, so saving money on this bill is important. Technicians can help educate their customers about energy-saving methods, including regular HVAC maintenance. Replacing old energy-wasting HVACs with newer, more energy efficient models is often the best way for consumers to save money. For example, air conditioners manufactured in the last 10 years have had to meet a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 13 or higher, which is 30% more efficient than older models. As an HVAC/R tech, you could help people install new systems and lower their monthly costs.

4. Be at the forefront of Green Energy

The rising demand for green energy is changing the HVAC/R industry. Every HVAC/R technician must have an EPA Section 608 Universal Certification, and consumers are increasingly interested in installing or upgrading to greener and more efficient systems. After you complete your training at ETI, you might want to learn about new technologies that are transforming the field. Solar power and geothermal heat pumps are gaining more popularity, and less known technologies such as the ice-powered air conditioner, which uses ice like a clean, renewable battery, are gaining traction. Educating yourself about these greener HVAC/R technologies will place you at the head of the renewable energy movement.
