EPA 608 Certification

Let’s start with the basics. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires all HVAC/R technicians who handle refrigerants to be certified under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. There are four types of EPA certifications, depending on the types of appliances you’ll be working with:

• Type I – For servicing small appliances
• Type II – For high-pressure appliances, including residential air conditioners and heat pumps
• Type III – For low-pressure appliances
• Universal – Covering all the above

NATE Certification

Next on the list is the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification.
