Welding Job Outlook

Whether you’re an aspiring welder or an experienced metalworker, the welding job outlook is important to know. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to obtain a clear answer from a simple Google search alone. Some sites say welding jobs are declining, while other sources mention a surge. Though we could defer to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which projects a moderate amount growth in the industry, the BLS fails to mention some the key ways in which the available welding jobs are changing. Allow us to explain these ambiguities so you can steer your welding career in the right direction.

The National Growth Rate
The BLS expects a 6 percent increase in welding jobs between 2016 and 2026. This rate of expansion is on par with the average growth rate for all occupations. However, national averages do not tell the full story. Like all professions, welding jobs are concentrated within a few distinct locations and industries. Therefore, it is more beneficial to look at growth in regard to the state that you live in, as well as the types of business that are common in your area.

States with the Most Welding Jobs
Luckily for us, Illinois is one of the best places to find a welding job. According to the American Welding Society, two out of five welders work in following six states: Texas, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois. Please note that two of these states — Michigan and Ohio — are virtually our neighbors. Welding jobs are plentiful in this region of the U.S. due to the amount of petroleum, automobiles, and fabricated metals we produce.

How to Guard Your Career Against Automation
If you’ve heard anything about a decrease in welding positions, it was likely in reference to automation. In today’s workforce, it Is becoming more and more common to see entry-level welding jobs replaced by robotics. This poses a significant threat to welders who lack experience and education. In order to see the best career prospects, it is highly encouraged that you complete a formal training program and continue to build your skill set through specialized certifications.
