Exploring technology and industrial fields often means having to deal with a large amount of jargon and acronyms. If you’ve been exploring new career options, you might be confused by the difference between “HVAC” and “HVAC/R” positions, or wondered whether the two are interchangeable. Today, we’ll clear up that confusion.
The Difference Between HVAC Jobs and HVAC/R Jobs
HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. On the other hand, the “R” in HVAC/R stands for refrigeration.
Both HVAC and HVAC/R technicians work with the systems circulating and moving air between the inside and outside spaces of residential and commercial buildings to keep them at a comfortable temperature. HVAC/R technicians also work on the refrigeration systems used to cool items like food and drinks for storage, transportation, and sale to consumers.
What HVAC/R Technicians Do
HVAC/R technicians maintain, repair and install heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. They typically do the following:
- Install electrical wiring and components
- Diagnose, install and maintain HVAC systems
- Repair or replace damaged HVAC parts and refrigeration systems
- Test and inspect HVAC and refrigeration components and systems
- Keep records of jobs performed for future appointments
- Recommend maintenance to improve the systems’ performance
Benefits of an HVAC/R Training Program
A good HVAC/R technician training program can be the gateway to a rewarding and engaging career if you enjoy hands-on work and problem-solving. A program which includes training in working with refrigeration equipment will equip you with a larger skillset that can open up more career pathways.
- Plentiful job opportunities: As more residential and commercial properties continue to need heating systems, air conditioners and refrigerators, the employment outlook of HVAC/R technicians continues to remain healthy.
- Ability to work almost anywhere: Technology for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration has become commonplace today. This presents HVAC/R technicians with tremendous flexibility regarding where to work, considering the rising demand for HVAC/R technicians and their services.
- Making a positive impact on the environment: Most jobs performed by HVAC/R technicians improve the efficiency of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, reducing the overall energy required to operate the systems. In turn, this decreases these systems’ carbon footprint.
- Great compensation: HVAC/R technicians receive highly competitive compensation. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary of an HVAC/R technician in 2023 was $57,300. It’s also not unusual for HVAC/R experts to work overtime, especially during peak cooling and heating seasons, and they’re compensated accordingly.
