What is the EPA 608 Certification in HVAC?

If you want to work as an HVAC/R technician in the United States, you’ll need to have the EPA Section 608 Certification. This certification enables technicians to work on stationary HVAC/R equipment and gives them the skills required to work safely with appliances containing ozone-depleting refrigerants. Whether you’re an experienced technician or someone who is exploring HVAC careers for the first time, it’s important that you stay up to date with safe and responsible refrigerant handling skills.

What is EPA Section 608?

EPA Section 608 is part of the Federal Clean Air Act. Under Section 608, people who maintain, service, repair or dispose of HVAC or refrigeration equipment that contains ozone-depleting refrigerants must be certified in proper refrigerant-handling techniques.

To be permitted to work in the HVAC/R industry in the USA, all technicians must have EPA Section 608 certification. Individual states may also have additional requirements, such as mandatory health and safety training.

In a reputable HVAC training program, you’ll learn:

  • Handling R-32, R-454B, and other modern refrigerants
  • Safety protocols
  • Leak detection
  • Ventilation
  • Fire prevention
  • EPA rules and regulations

It’s possible to study for refrigerant certifications from a textbook. However, employers are looking for people with hands-on experience. The ETI HVAC/R program takes seven months to complete and will give you the kind of experience employers demand. Local employers know that ETI graduates are highly trained and can be put to work quickly upon hiring.

Getting Started with HVAC Careers

Refrigerant training is just one aspect of becoming a skilled HVAC/R technician. HVAC careers require several skills, including electrical work, handling gas piping, sheet metal fabrication, and more. A good HVAC training course will introduce you to these skills so you can work confidently and fill a variety of roles in the industry.

At the ETI School of Skilled Trades, we offer HVAC training programs to help would-be technicians gain the practical skills required to succeed in the industry. We have a 15,000+ sq. ft lab ful of equipment that our students can use to practice sheet metal fabrication, conduit bending, safe electrical skills, HVAC diagnostics, and more.

Our flexible timetable means learners can fit their courses in around their busy schedules. We have day and evening classes available, and many of our learners are working or studying academic courses while simultaneously completing our training programs.

We have financial aid programs available for qualifying individuals and run a unique employer-graduates matching program to help those who complete the course find employment quickly after graduation.

Enroll in our HVAC/R program today and learn the essential skills required to start your career in the HVAC industry!
